When does the EU AI Act come into force?

The EU AI Act becomes fully applicable on 2 August 2026 for most high-risk AI systems. Article 6(1) classification rules extend to 2 August 2027.

What are the penalties for non-compliance?

Under Article 99: up to €35M or 7% of global turnover for prohibited practices; €15M or 3% for high-risk non-compliance; €7.5M or 1% for providing incorrect information to authorities.

Which AI systems are classified as high-risk?

Annex III lists high-risk systems including AI used in recruitment/hiring (§4a), credit scoring and financial decisions (§5b), and employee performance monitoring (§4b), among others.

Does the EU AI Act apply to companies outside the EU?

Yes. The Act has extraterritorial reach similar to GDPR. Any company whose AI systems produce outputs that reach EU residents must comply, regardless of where the company is based.

High-Risk AI Systems

AI used in hiring, credit scoring, or employee monitoring is classified as high-risk under Annex III of the EU AI Act.

Documentation Required

Article 11 requires complete technical documentation for every high-risk AI system — training data, performance metrics, limitations.

Human Oversight
